A Functional Medicine Approach to ADHD

Looking Beyond the Diagnosis of ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions of children and can impact attention, focus, emotional regulation, learning, and daily life. While medications can be an important part of treatment for some children, functional medicine asks an additional question:

"Why is this child's brain struggling with attention and regulation?"

At Changing Tides Functional Medicine, we take a whole-child approach by exploring the factors that influence healthy brain function. Every child is unique, and our goal is to identify opportunities to support optimal health alongside conventional medical care when appropriate.

The Brain Doesn't Work Alone

Healthy brain function depends on many systems working together. We evaluate factors that may influence attention, behavior, and learning, including:

  • Nutrition

  • Sleep quality

  • Physical activity

  • Gut health

  • Stress

  • Environmental exposures

  • Underlying medical conditions

  • Vitamin and mineral status

Rather than focusing on symptoms alone, we work to understand the complete picture of your child's health.

The Gut-Brain Connection

Did you know that the digestive system and the brain are constantly communicating?

This communication, often called the gut-brain axis, allows signals to travel between the digestive tract and the nervous system. A healthy gut supports digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and healthy communication between the gut and brain.

When gut health is disrupted, children may experience digestive symptoms such as constipation, abdominal discomfort, or irregular bowel habits. Research also suggests that the gut microbiome may influence brain function and behavior! We now have data that shows supplementing with certain strains of probiotics can improve ADHD and Autism behaviours.

Supporting gut health may include:

  • Optimizing dietary fiber

  • Encouraging a variety of whole foods

  • Addressing constipation or digestive concerns

  • Identifying potential food sensitivities when appropriate

  • Supporting a healthy balance of beneficial gut bacteria

  • Promoting healthy digestion and nutrient absorption

Nutrition Fuels the Brain

The brain requires a steady supply of nutrients to function properly.

Many of the brain's chemical messengers (called neurotransmitters) are produced from amino acids, vitamins, and minerals obtained through a healthy diet.

For example:

  • Protein provides amino acids used to build neurotransmitters.

  • Iron plays an important role in dopamine production and healthy brain development.

  • Zinc supports normal nervous system function.

  • Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, including those important for nerve function.

  • Vitamin B6, Folate, and Vitamin B12 help support normal neurotransmitter synthesis.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids are important structural components of the brain and support normal cognitive function.

When appropriate, we may recommend laboratory testing to evaluate for nutrient deficiencies and discuss evidence-informed ways to optimize nutrition.

Supporting Healthy Neurotransmitter Function

Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin help regulate attention, motivation, mood, and focus.

Healthy neurotransmitter production depends on many factors, including:

  • Adequate protein intake

  • Healthy digestion and nutrient absorption

  • Sufficient vitamins and minerals

  • Quality sleep

  • Regular physical activity

  • Stress management

  • Overall metabolic health

Our goal is to ensure your child's body has the building blocks it needs to support healthy brain function.

Using Nature to Support Healing

Functional medicine recognizes the body's remarkable ability to heal and adapt when given the right support.

Depending on your child's individual needs, recommendations may include:

  • Whole-food nutrition

  • Outdoor activity and regular exercise

  • Healthy sleep habits

  • Stress reduction techniques

  • Age-appropriate mindfulness practices

  • Targeted nutritional supplementation when appropriate

  • Gut health support

  • Reducing ultra-processed foods and excess added sugars

  • Limiting environmental factors that may contribute to poor health

Every treatment plan is personalized to your child and based on their history, symptoms, and clinical evaluation.

Our Approach Is Personalized

No two children with ADHD are exactly alike.

During your child's comprehensive evaluation, we take time to understand:

  • Pregnancy and birth history

  • Developmental milestones

  • Medical history

  • Family history

  • Nutrition

  • Sleep habits

  • Digestive health

  • Physical activity

  • School performance

  • Behavioral concerns

  • Previous laboratory testing

  • Current medications and supplements

From there, we develop an individualized care plan designed to support your child's overall health and well-being.
